 Biography Header

Lt. Col. Eric ShappeeLt Col. Eric Shappee has been a member of Civil Air Patrol for over 20 years. He began his CAP career in the late 1980’s as the personnel officer and then leadership officer for Antelope Valley Cadet Squadron in Lancaster, CA. In 1991, Lt Col. Shappee transferred to the Prescott Composite Squadron in Prescott, AZ where he served as Deputy Commander for Cadets. Lt Col. Shappee transferred back to Antelope Valley Cadet Squadron in 1994 and served as a leadership and Aerospace Ed Officer.

August of 2000, Lt Col. Shappee transferred to Kansas and became a member of Salina Composite Squadron where he served for a short time as Squadron Safety Officer before accepting the position of Kansas Wing Safety Officer. Under Lt Col. Shappee’s leadership, Kansas Wing won the first Sights on Safety Award and the Paul W. Turner Safety Award twice. In early 2006, he accepted the position of Kansas Wing Chief of Staff and served in that capacity until June of 2008. Lt Col. Shappee is a CAP Command Pilot, an active CAP instructor pilot, a check pilot, orientation pilot and transport pilot. He is also a designated Master Instructor (MCFI) by the National Association of Flight Instructors (NAFI).

In his professional life, Lt Col Shappee is an Associate Professor of Aviation and the Safety Officer for the Aviation Department at Kansas State University at Salina. Lt Col. Shappee started his professional career in education in 1995 in Lancaster, CA at Barnes Aviation as a flight instructor and at Antelope Valley College as an Adjunct instructor. At Kansas State University at Salina Lt Col. Shappee teaches Introduction to Aviation, Aviation Safety Management, System Safety, Aviation Accident Investigation, and an occasional pilot ground school.
